Basics

First of all I am going to talk about 2 basic things

  • Holding the Camera..
  • Focal length and Shutter Speed. (In order to get sharp images)

It’s very difficult to change a behavior after it becomes a habit. So it is very important to start in a correct way…

Holding the Camera:

  • in order to hold the camera in a correct way you need to perform a tripod with your body. Therefore you need to touch the camera in 3 points.
  • your right hand holding the grip and controlling the buttons and dials on the right side of the camera.
  • your left hand supporting the camera lens and controlling zoom and focus rings.
  • your eye on the viewfinder making the third point
  • You need to separate your legs a little bit in order not to sway around.
  • You need to bow your knees a little bit to get the ability to absorb the vibrations.
  • To get even a sharper image, it is recommended to exhale before taking the shot.

Focal length and shutter speed:

  • When you are working with a long focal length like 300mm it is recommended to use a shutter speed faster than 1/300 of a second. That insures you get a sharp image when not using a tripod. In shorter focal length like 50mm, the shutter speed  needs to be faster then 1/50 of a second.
  • If you need to show some motion in the photo then don’t hesitate to use slower shutter speeds like 1/30 of a second (on 50mm focal length). Well experienced photographer knows how to control his camera and knows how to get the best out of his gear.
